SNCF : Pépy update on the logistics and alliances

The alliance concluded by the end of August with the champion of the car-pooling long-distance BlaBlaCar, the RATP and Transdev is no doubt that the first step on the way of the opening now favoured by the president of SNCF Mobilités. Opening to the client, the company, at the international, competition, innovation and other activities of the group for a better performance in transverse.

“We need to look at all the mobility solutions with interest and kindness, including those that may appear as competitors of the train, such as BlaBlaCar,” said Guillaume Pépy this October 3, during a presentation to the press of the project of group.

This benevolence towards the new forms of mobility are justified in order to face a common enemy : the autosolisme. In other words, the individual use of the private car. “We are in the same family of transport shared “, insists Guillaume Pépy. Hence the signing of this memorandum of agreement with RATP, BlaBlaCar and Transdev, to create a common warehouse combining data of the three operators, rather than letting Google or any other use at its discretion. Because the GAFA are the other enemy common to the SNCF and the actors of the new mobility.

Create the first assistant to staff mobility in the world

But to counter this, the group is working on a more ambitious project : a personal assistant mobility designed on the model still emerging of the ” mobility as a service “. This allows from a single application to plan, book, pay and edit its title as the transport (plan, book, pay, ticket). If there are already bricks in the netherlands, in Switzerland or in Finland, the overall solution does not yet exist and the SNCF aims to be the first to offer this service.

“We are not starting from nothing, reminiscent of Guillaume Pépy. Our application already generates 25 million unique visitors per month. “

The autosolisme, reminds the president of SNCF Mobilités, goes against the climate emergency, the costs of pollution and generates the thrombosis in the streets and on the roads.

To get out of it, ” says Guillaume Pépy, “we must draw on the logistics, doing the door-to-door, and customization, offers an industrial service at a lower cost and presents a good ecological footprint.”

Move from ninth to fifth position in the logistics

Increased from 10% to 33% of sales in 15 years, the logistics business is currently worth € 10 billion and employs 50,000 people (out of a total figure of 156,000 employees), of the SNCF, the 9th player in the world. The group does not intend to stay there, and is targeting a place in the top 5 worldwide, and a turnover of 15 to 17 billion, to near-parity with the activity of travelers. The economic cycles on the two activities being complementary, it makes sense to balance it out.

“Today, we are absent from 120 countries,” says Mathias Vicherat, deputy director-general.

It does not stick to the needs of large international customers. Of course, the rail freight, as such, suffers, and not only in France. “In the Face of the road, there is no economic model in Europe,” says Guillaume Pépy, who calls for a carbon tax and a re-regulation of road sector. But the logistics is not limited to the cargo, and it is a very profitable business to the international. The SNCF, which has already acquired a few months ago the swiss BSL Cargo, put on new acquisitions to a change of scale. The goal would be to create 200 to 250 million euros of synergies. So far, his discussions have not resulted.

Re-invent the jobs of more than 150,000 employees

Remains, however, a point on which opening strategy, innovation and change gear in the logistics will change little : the essential issue of the transformation of businesses. An issue that Guillaume Pépy was perfectly aware. All the more that he anticipates an implementation rather rapidly opening to competition. Jean-Cyril Spinetta (who was entrusted by the government with a mission on the subject) should make its copy in early 2018, and after the voting of the law and calls for tenders, it could become concrete as soon as the beginning of 2020. By region, employees, them, worry about already to be able to be transferred to authority among the private operators who have won tenders…
