The postal market has reached its lowest level since 2004

The turnover of the French postal market, which concerns The Position and 31 other companies that are authorized to distribute mail or parcels, decreased 1.6% in 2016, to $ 10.3 billion euros, excluding tax, said on Thursday the controlling Authority of posts and telecommunications (Arcep).

This is the tenth consecutive year of decline for the sector, both in terms of revenues and volume, the market reaching its lowest level since 2004, said the Arcep in its observatory annual postal activities.

A result of the decline in activity, the sector, which employed 209.000 people at the end of 2015, has suffered an annual decline of 3,000 jobs, more small decline, however, over the last 10 years. Since 2009, the industry lost almost 40,000 jobs.

Most of the packages distributed

Investment increased, in contrast, for the second year in a row, 22% on the year 2016 (compared with +11.6% in 2015), to achieve 630 million euros.

In total, $ 12.8 billion objects have been distributed in France and export in 2016.

In detail, the items of correspondence in France were down 5.3% (-5,8% in 2015) with $ 11 billion of distributed objects, which leads to a decline of 2.7% of revenue to 7.7 billion euros. These shipments account for 74.2 percent of the total revenue of the objects that are addressed in France.

The distribution of packages by the authorized operators and off-express, which represents 2.9% of shipments, in contrast, is up 8.6%, despite a decline for the second consecutive year, parcels delivered against signature of 3.6%.

A consequence of this increase, revenues from this activity are also on the rise, from 3.4% to reach € 1.7 billion excluding vat, which represents 17.2% of the total income of the items addressed in France.

The observatory does not however take into account that the activity of the operators and does not include the express package, says Arcep, giving a “partial vision of the parcel delivery domestic”.

The pub retracts

The volume of the press, by subscription, that is to say, distributed by portage or by mail circuit is undergoing an evolution varied, is down 5% via mail circuit, but up 1.4% on portage. The associated revenue is, however, a decrease of 5.9%, after a decrease of 3.3% in 2015.

The market for advertising continues to shrink from 2.4% in volume, less than in previous years (-8% in 2015 and 9.7% in 2014) but more strongly in income, -6% (- 2.4 per cent in 2015).
